Derek Van Derven is an American figurative painter from New Jersey. He is widely recognized for a unique artistic process, using many texture effects and techniques in painting, including Rembrandt van Rijn’s medium and Leonardo da Vinci’s techniques. For some effects, he uses chiaroscuro and sfumato similar to Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio’s techniques.
Derek follows the “Old Masters” of the Renaissance and Baroque period in Europe, as well as art as simple as a cave painting done thousands of years ago.
Derek paints a consistent theme of the love between a mother and child, and escaping into nature, meditating, away from the chaos, concrete, and the steel of industrialized cities.
